I love shopping at Trader Joe’s. It’s small, easy to get around and I know I can find some really healthy food products there. I also love that they have pre-cut, pre-seasoned veggies to make things easy for busy moms; meals to heat up that are healthy, and pre-made salads.
But, the key word there is I can find some healthy foods. Although I can find nitrate free turkey bacon, whole wheat products, low sugar protein bars, nitrate free deli meat and turkey bacon, I still have to look closely at labels. Just because I find a food item in Trader Joe’s does not guarantee that it is healthy. The key things I want to watch out for are:
- High Fructose corn syrup
- Hydrogenated oils
- Over 10 grams of added sugar in a bar or yogurt item
- Products that are Refined
- Monosodium Glutamate or MSG
So, enjoy shopping at Trader Joe’s. It can be a great resource for quick and easy healthy items. But, still take the time to look not only at the calories and portion sizes, but also sodium milligrams, sugar grams and one more step, ingredients! Happy Shopping!
