What is Healthy Eating: Carrot Sticks and Celery?

What is Healthy Eating: Carrot Sticks and Celery? With all of the fad diets, nutrition books, and weight loss shows you’d think America would be getting healthier! So, why are we not?

I have been in the fitness industry for the past 7 years and prior to that studied the behaviors and habits people have with food. It is no wonder to me why people are so confused about what to eat, what not to eat, how much they should eat, and what really what is healthy eating. With all the information our society throws at us, it is hard to decipher between the good and the bad. The truth is, there is no wrong or right way to healthy eating. Now there are two things you should avoid like the plague: Trans fats and high fructose corn syrup. Other than that, no food is off limits. Portion control and moderation is the key to successful and healthy eating.

Healthy Eating is Not Difficult

I am here to tell you that healthy eating should not be that difficult. The simple answer to what is healthy eating is: healthy eating is different for everyone. A person’s culture will largely determine what eating healthy is to them. I am not going to try and convince a European that the “Weight Watchers” diet is healthy as they would laugh in my face. I am not going to tell a client that was raised on meat and potatoes to get rid of it. Expecting people to make unrealistic changes in their diet is only going to lead to failure and misery.

So, the first thing you need to do to figure out when you ask yourself “what is healthy eating” is reflect on your past. If you are Italian and you love pasta, bread and great wine, then let’s figure out a way to incorporate that into your healthy eating plan.

The Key to Healthy Eating: Everything In Moderation

I really believe in the concept of everything in moderation. You can have all the food you love as long as you maintain a good balance; meaning, balance out the good with the bad. Take me for example: I love pizza, but as we all know pizza is very caloric and will not help me lose weight. On the other hand, I can enjoy my pizza and still live a healthy life. I don’t eat pizza every day, or even once a week, because eating too much of anything is not a good thing. When I order pizza, I always try to have a side salad before so I can maintain that healthy eating balance. In addition, having a little something healthy before curbs my appetite so that I’m content with eating 1 to 2 slices instead of 3 to 4.

What I am trying to say is, you can enjoy the foods you love, look forward to eating again, without worrying about counting every calorie, fat gram, and carbohydrate gram. Healthy eating is about balance, whole foods rather than processed foods, and the satiety you get from foods you eat. You can eat bread, pasta, cheese, meat, even an occasional cookie or dessert. But the key to the answer to what is healthy eating is balancing the good with the bad. Try to always get plenty of vegetables, fruit, and whole grains into your diet. Mix that with the other stuff and you will have answered the question “what is healthy eating” and be on your way to a life of wellness!

Bon Appetit!

Megan Olsen Bio:

Megan has been working in the exercise and nutrition industry for most of her adult life. Her passion for health started at a very young age, but didn’t always come easy for her. Megan’s desire is to help each guest find the correct solution to their weight loss struggle. Megan’s philosophy is simple, “I don’t believe in diets, nor do I expect you to eat and follow a regiment that will leave you feeling deprived and hungry. What I do expect, is for us to work as a team to figure out a way that will work for you. It is going to take dedication, determination, and a plan. Weight-loss is a viscous cycle usually consisting of yo-yo diets that are impossible to maintain. Too often people set themselves up for failure by setting unrealistic expectations and goal. You are all capable of succeeding! Weight loss should not be a fad, but a lifestyle.

It took me a lot of years to get it right for myself and it is going to take some time for you. There is no greater feeling than confidence and I want to help you obtain it!”
