How To Crush A Workout On The Days You’d Rather Do Anything BUT Workout

Written By PFC Fitness Camp • 2 min read

Please tell me I’m not the only one that wakes up absolutely dreading the idea of working out some days—the sports bra, the shoes, the actual idea of the physical exertion—it all just sounds so exhausting.

Even being surrounded by some of the top nutritionists, trainers and health coaches at PFC Fitness Camp, I somehow still manage to have those days where procrastination kicks in, and my mind gets the best of me.

Lucky for anyone who’s reading this and struggles with the same issues as myself, I had an epiphany. Yes, an epiphany that helps me absolutely crush a workout even on the days when I’d rather binge watch Scandal than hit the gym!
The key? You need more mental strength than physical endurance. Sounds opposite of what it should be, but it’s true and I’ve got 5 mental tricks that get me out of bed and into workout mode every time.

1. Game Plan Your Workout The Night Before
By game plan, I mean be specific about your workout and the goal you want to achieve by the end of it. Going to a workout without a plan is like going to the grocery store without a list. You get sidetracked, lose focus and talk yourself out of doing more than you can. OR you find yourself in the ice-cream aisle torn between classic vanilla or pumpkin—BOTH, pumpkin only comes but once a year!

I digress.
Stone Steps is a local beach access point near my house that kicks my but every 130 steps up the steep ascent. When I go there with a plan. i.e. I will not stop until I do 20 sets, I actually do 20 sets. When I go simply for a workout and no goal, I’m lucky if I make it to 5.

2. Set Out Your Clothes the Night Before
Did you know your clothes have eyes? At least mine do, and they follow me like Disneyland’s haunted mansion headstones until I put them on and walk out the door. Sounds simple, but very effective.

3. Go First Thing in the Morning
Trust me, the great intentions of exercising after work vanish when faced with the option of happy hour socializing vs. solo sweating. Make it your morning routine. You’ll feel accomplished, energized, happy and ready to take on the world! Or maybe just the day:)

4. Pump up the Jams
Have a playlist! Pushing yourself in silence makes it that much easier to hear that stupid inner voice tell you you’re tired. Thomas Jack radio on Pandora seems to do the trick for me at the moment.

5. Repeat Affirmation While Your Workout
This is the fist time I’ve admitted to this, but I do a little self pep-talk when my legs get heavy, my breath shortens and the end feels far away.

“Better legs, better butt, better body, better mood.”

That’s it. And it works for me. Whether you use this one or make up your own, the affirmation really does help when you’re mind is ready to quit.

Annnd that’s all i’ve got folks. Give it a whirl or make up your own full-proof workout plan! Your body, mind and soul will thank you.
